Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle

It is never too early or too late to take good care of yourself.  A healthy lifestyle offers a lot of benefits including the chance to just feel better.  Today is a good time to make the best choices possible.  Some of these include:

  • Regular exercise

  • Keeping doctor and dentist appointments

  • Eating a balanced and healthy diet

  • Sleeping at least 7 to 8 hours per night

  • Stress management

  • Maintaining a positive attitude

Healthy Weight

Making your meal plans around fruits, vegetables, unprocessed meat, and reducing processed foods and unhealthy fats is a good place to start.  Focus on eating whole food prepared from scratch.

Sleep Patterns

Many people suffer from sleep disorders including insomnia, apnea, and other issues.  Remaining physically active during the day will help.  Exercise and healthy eating contribute toward a good night's rest of at least 7 to 8 hours each night.  As little as 10 minutes a day of solid exercise can help.  Limiting the amount of caffeine and eating the correct balance of foods can help stabilize your blood sugar leading to a more restful sleep.

Insufficient sleep will not only make you sluggish the next day, it can affect your reasoning capacity and can lead to chronic diseases.  Additionally, sleep deprivation leads to worsening insulin resistance, an increase in hunger hormones, and weight gain.

Mental Health

Keeping a positive attitude, managing stress, and finding safe methods to release anxiety or tension all help a person move toward good mental health.  Exercising releases endorphins.  Those are the feel-good molecules that help relieve depression.

A diet filled with nutrients and proper hydration will help the brain function to its optimum.  Consuming highly processed foods will generally leave the individual feeling sluggish which can lead to feeling sadder or less able to cope with the day's emotional and physical requirements.

Disease Prevention

The choices we make every day affect our future.  Choosing to avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, safe exercising, healthy food choices, all contribute toward avoiding diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and strokes.  There are also studies that show a healthy lifestyle can even counterbalance dementia.

Appropriate and regular exercise will help maintain the best weight for your age and body type.  This has shown to be significant in the prevention of diabetes, cardiac problems, and certain cancers.  The exercise will also strengthen the heart muscles.  Keeping limber can help with joint strength and flexibility, both of which can be problems in older adults when preventing injuries is a major concern.

Longevity

By middle age, a good and healthy lifestyle will pay off.  A 20-year study released January in 2020 shows that men can live an additional 7.6 years and women 10 years disease-free.  They are more likely to avoid developing hypertension, kidney disease, and cardiovascular problems.
